What is the Swine flu?Swine flu is an infection caused by a virus named H1N1 virus that is transmitted from pigs to humans. The swine flu virus is hosted in pigs. The countries affected in the 2009 pandemic are United States of America, Mexico, South America, Canada, Europe, Kenya, Japan, Taiwan, and China. The Swine flu symptom in humans is similar to that of influenza. The symptoms of Swine flu fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. The 2009 outbreak that has taken place in the past few months indicates a rise in percentage of patients that reported diarrhea and vomiting. The 2009 H1N1 virus is not a zoonotic swine flu virus, as it is not transmitted from pigs to humans rather its transmitted from one person to another. Like influenza, swine flu spreads between humans through coughing or sneezing and people touching something with the virus on The swine flu virus in humans is most contagious during its first five days onset of the illness. Children, can remain contagious for even as long as ten days. Diagnosis for swine flu can be made by sending a specimen, collected during the first five days for laboratory analysis.To prevent spread of the Swine flu virus among humans its recommended to follow the standard infection control preventive measures similar to that against influenza. This includes frequent washing of hands with soap and using hand sanitizers. The regular practise of washing hands can help a great deal in prevention of viral infections such as influenza and the swine flu virus. Influenza can spread in coughs or sneezes, but an increasing body of evidence shows small droplets containing the virus can linger on common usage households tabletops, tv remote, telephones etc and and hence transferred by the fingers to the mouth, nose or eyes. Social distancing or avoiding personal contact or touch is another means of prevention. |
